In the summer, water needs for our plants are increased. What do we pay attention to when watering plants and what is the most effective way to better watering?

  • Watering should be done early in the morning or ideally late in the afternoon, in conditions without intense sun and while the soil is still not warm. Otherwise, the larger amount of water evaporates, while with afternoon watering the soil has time to absorb the water before the heat of the next day.
  • The soil in the pots mostly dries faster than in a well-watered flower bed. Small pots with seasonally placed in places with direct exposure to the sun some summer days may need watering even twice a day. We generally water our pots more often than plants placed directly in the soil, except of course for species that thrive in drought conditions.
  • Watering hose is only suitable for flower gardens and the most correct way is to leave the hose on the ground near the roots with water at moderate pressure until the roots of the plant receive the necessary amount. The pots should be watered with a watering can, if using rubber, the water should have minimal pressure so as not to upset the soil on the surface of the pot and injure the roots.
  • During watering we avoid to wet the foliage and of course the flowers of the plants. Moisture remaining on the leaves during the night often results in the appearance of diseases, fungi, etc. while the water in the foliage combined with the sun creates burns.
  • In trees, perennial shrubs and ornamental, as well as climbing planted in a garden and especially in their first years of growth, the soil around the roots should be dug – shaped in such a way that the pit formed holds a sufficient amount of water during watering and this is then absorbed by the roots gradually.
  • Proper drainage is crucial for the plant to take in the watering water. We cover with gravel, small stones, broken tiles, etc. the base of the pot before placing soil, so that the runoff of the excess water takes place gradually and of course we make sure that the pot has a hole, otherwise the root rot is …a matter of time.
  • The quality of the soil significantly affects the time it takes to dry. If we notice that after watering for several days the soil in the pot looks approximately like ” mud ” and if the pot has the right drainage system, we replace it with new fluffy soil otherwise soon the roots of the plant will be destroyed by excessive moisture or diseases that develop due to it.
